The World’s First FPSO with Carbon Capture Sets Sail

Our company is concerned about the news of large ships such as FPSO.On March 3rd, the AGOGO FPSO, the world’s first floating production storage and offloading (FPSO) unit equipped with an offshore carbon capture and storage (CCS) system, successfully set sail from Shanghai COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry. Assisted by one main tug and six auxiliary tugs, the FPSO smoothly departed from Dock No. 7, marking a significant milestone in the offshore energy sector.

Pioneering Carbon Capture Technology

AGOGO FPSO is the first FPSO capable of post-combustion carbon capture, setting a new standard for offshore emissions reduction. By capturing CO₂ from gas turbine exhaust, it is expected to achieve a 27% reduction in carbon emissions, paving the way for future zero-carbon FPSOs. Additionally, the vessel integrates cutting-edge technologies such as electrification, automation, digital systems, combined cycle power systems, seawater turbines, and steam generators, significantly enhancing operational efficiency while further reducing emissions.

Record-Breaking Construction & Smooth Towage

Shanghai COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry played a crucial role in the integration of AGOGO FPSO’s second-phase modules. Overcoming numerous challenges, the team successfully installed over 15,000 tons of topside modules and laid over one million meters of cables, completing the conversion one month ahead of schedule—a record for similar FPSO conversions.

Towage was the final critical step in the FPSO’s journey. Extensive planning, multiple strategy meetings, and detailed safety measures ensured a safe and efficient departure.

Future Operations in Angola

AGOGO FPSO is expected to commence production in September 2025 at the West Hub of Angola’s Block 15/06, with a production capacity of 120,000 barrels of oil per day and a storage capacity of 1.6 million barrels. Its deployment will inject fresh momentum into the global energy market while setting a benchmark for green and low-carbon FPSO operations.
