Understanding ASTM specifications for steel and iron material pipeline fittings
The American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) sets standards for steel and iron material pipeline fittings. ASTM standards specify the manufacturing processes and precise chemical composition requirements for steel pipes, fittings, and flanges, including the percentages of carbon, manganese, nickel, and other chemical elements. Different materials are distinguished by steel grades (Grade).
For instance:
Flanges: ASTM A182 Grade F304, F304L, F316L
Pipes: ASTM A312 Grade TP304, TP304L, TP316L
Fittings: ASTM A403 Grade WP304, WP304L, WP316L
In engineering project material lists, ASTM grades frequently appear in descriptions of steel pipes, fittings, flanges, valves, bolts, and nuts, forming a cohesive system.
It’s important to note that ASTM A105 does not differentiate by steel grades. Sometimes, people use the description method ASTM A105N, where ‘N’ doesn’t denote a steel grade but signifies normalized. Normalizing is a heat treatment method used only for ferritic materials to relieve internal stresses formed during forging, casting, or shaping processes.
Common ASTM steel and iron material pipeline fittings include:
Pipes:
A106: Specifies seamless carbon steel pipes for high temperatures
A335: Specifies ferritic alloy seamless steel pipes for high temperatures
A333: Specifies seamless and welded carbon and alloy steel pipes for low temperatures
Fittings:
A234: Specifies rolled carbon and alloy steel seamless and welded fittings
A420: Specifies rolled low-temperature carbon and alloy steel fittings
A403: Specifies rolled austenitic stainless steel fittings
Flanges:
A105: Specifies forged carbon steel pipe component materials
A182: Specifies forged alloy steel and stainless steel pipe component materials
A350: Specifies forged low-temperature carbon steel and low-alloy steel pipe component materials
Valves:
A216: Specifies carbon steel castings suitable for welding at high temperatures
A217: Specifies martensitic stainless steel and alloy steel castings for high-temperature pressure use
A352: Specifies ferritic and martensitic stainless steel castings for low-temperature pressure use
Bolts and Nuts:
A193: Specifies stainless steel and alloy steel bolt materials for high-temperature pressure equipment
A194: Specifies carbon steel and alloy steel nut materials for high-temperature and high-pressure equipment
A320: Specifies alloy steel and stainless steel bolt materials for low temperatures
With a focus on industrial pressure pipeline fitting development, production, and service, Haihao Group offers a wide range of pipeline joints, serving industries such as marine, petroleum, chemical, mechanical (pump valve functional modules, trace heating, instrument piping, etc.), ships, power, metallurgy, natural gas, urban engineering facilities, iron and steel. Their products adhere to standards such as ASME/ANSI, DIN, EN10241, BS, GB, and domestic industry standards, using materials compliant with ASTM specifications for carbon steel, stainless steel, duplex stainless steel, and alloy steel.
Adhering to the business philosophy of “service creates value,” they aim to build a nationwide industrial metal pipeline fitting product supply and service system.
