What is FPSO Towing?

FPSO towing refers to the process of moving the various sections or the entire FPSO vessel to its designated location. This operation is critical, especially when it involves transporting large, heavy, and unpowered sections over long distances. Effective towing requires careful planning, coordination, and execution to ensure the safety and integrity of the FPSO.

Recent Towing Success:

Recently, under the meticulous oversight of the Nantong Maritime Department, the hull midsection of the world’s largest and highest oil storage capacity FPSO project successfully completed its towing task and safely arrived at the COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry dock in Nantong. This towing operation marks the first long-distance, large convoy, unpowered restricted project towing task in the Yangtze River Basin, covering a total distance of over 270 nautical miles.

Towing Details:

The towing convoy for the FPSO sections consisted of:

1 high-power tugboat for primary towing

4 auxiliary tugboats for binding and stabilizing

2 emergency tugboats for contingency support

The convoy started from Yangzhou and reached its destination in Qidong. Throughout the process, the Nantong Maritime Department provided proactive service and efficient security measures. On-site enforcement was robust, with early deployment of forces, preemptive control of relevant waters, and establishment of dedicated communication channels. Following a strict traffic maintenance plan, the operation adhered to the highest standards and most stringent requirements, with comprehensive emergency preparations ensuring the project’s smooth execution.

FPSO Project Specifications:

The FPSO in question boasts impressive specifications:

Total Length: 360 meters

Breadth: 60 meters

Depth: 34.3 meters

Total Steel Structure Weight: Over 80,000 tons

Design Storage Capacity: 1.6 million barrels of oil

Daily Production Capacity: 225,000 barrels of oil and 12 million cubic meters of natural gas

This FPSO project is the largest of its kind to date. The hull was constructed in three parallel sections, and the successful completion of the midsection tow lays a solid foundation for the subsequent integration of the three segments and ensures the project’s timely delivery.
