Haihao Group congratulates China shipbuilding on landmark LNG shipbuilding order

April 29th marked a historic moment in the maritime industry as China Shipbuilding Group and Qatar Energy Group convened in Beijing for the signing ceremony of an unprecedented order: 18 of the world’s largest 271,000 cubic meter ultra-large liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers. This monumental agreement sets a new global record for the largest single shipbuilding order ever placed.

These groundbreaking vessels, to be designed and constructed by Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of China Shipbuilding Group, boast impressive specifications. With a length of 344 meters, a width of 53.6 meters, a depth of 27.2 meters, and a draft of 12 meters, these LNG carriers will employ dual-fuel low-speed engines and the NO96 Super+ containment system.

LNG carriers, often referred to as the “super refrigerated trucks” of the sea, are among the most challenging vessels to build, representing one of the three “crown jewels” of the global shipbuilding industry.

Highlighted by five key technological features, these vessels demonstrate remarkable advancements:

Enhanced Cargo Capacity: Adopting a compact 5-tank design, these vessels boast a 57% increase in carrying capacity compared to conventional 174,000 cubic meter LNG carriers.

Optimized Performance: Utilizing a multi-objective optimized twin-skeg hull form, these vessels offer superior speed and reduced evaporation rates, resulting in a 9.9% decrease in energy consumption per tonne-mile compared to 174,000 cubic meter LNG carriers.

Enhanced Safety Measures: Incorporating reinforced insulation modules in the cargo tanks, real-time sloshing monitoring systems, and hull stress monitoring and collision avoidance systems, these vessels prioritize safety at every stage.

Improved Maneuverability: Equipped with boil-off gas reliquefaction systems and shaft-driven reverse thrust systems, these vessels offer enhanced maneuverability while achieving a 23% reduction in Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII) compared to 174,000 cubic meter LNG carriers.

Versatile Design: With diversified optimization of draft and loading designs, these vessels are compatible with major shipping routes, ensuring versatility and efficiency in operation.

As an industry leader with over four decades of expertise in pipeline system solutions, Haihao Group extends heartfelt congratulations to China Shipbuilding on this remarkable achievement. We are committed to closely monitoring the progress of this project and stand ready to contribute our expertise in pipeline system solutions to support the construction of these vessels. Together, let us continue to propel innovation and excellence in the maritime industry.
