Five leading european steel distributors unite to form Astedis

In a groundbreaking move for the European steel industry, five prominent steel material distribution organizations have come together to establish a formidable consortium known as Astedis. This collective powerhouse boasts an extensive sales network that spans across the entire European continent. The founding members of this significant collaboration are Coalsider from Spain, European Steel Group from Poland, Nordwest from Germany, Sider Center from Italy, and Socoda from France.

These five distribution entities collectively represent over 200 mid-sized steel distributors. The primary objective behind the formation of Astedis is to cultivate stable strategic relationships with key steel producers in Europe. By leveraging synergies, this consortium aims to consolidate steel distribution across the European region while offering centralized oversight, robust central warehousing facilities, and comprehensive support services.

A representative from one of the member companies of Astedis emphasized that a fundamental principle in establishing this expansive sales network is that each distributor will maintain its autonomy within its respective national markets. This approach respects the unique characteristics of each country’s steel market. In recent years, private trade among mid-sized enterprises has gained increasing prominence. Astedis believes that the network it has built will unlock new growth opportunities for all stakeholders involved.

Collectively, these five distribution organizations oversee an annual sales volume of approximately 3.5 million metric tons of steel products. Among them, Nordwest, headquartered in Dortmund, Germany, recorded a staggering steel trading turnover of €5.8 billion (approximately $6.1 billion USD) in 2022. Coalsider, operating primarily in Spain, distributed over 185,000 metric tons of steel products, including beams, profiles, pipes, and plates, in the same year. The company boasts 39 warehouses strategically positioned for efficient nationwide delivery. European Steel Group, comprising ten shareholders and equipped with 35 warehouses, achieves an annual steel sales volume of around 400,000 metric tons. Meanwhile, Sider Center, with its 29 distributors and 42 warehouses, distributes approximately 350,000 metric tons of steel products annually. Socoda, in France, maintains a sales network consisting of 33 distributors, contributing to an annual steel sales volume of 500,000 metric tons.
