World’s First Liquid Hydrogen Corridor to Link Oman, the Netherlands, and Germany

World’s First Liquid Hydrogen Corridor to Link Oman, the Netherlands, and Germany

As an expert in pipeline systems, Haihao Group is committed to staying at the forefront of global pipeline industry developments, especially those related to emerging energy sectors. We are pleased to share the latest significant news with our clients:

A Joint Development Agreement (JDA) has been signed to establish the world’s first liquid hydrogen corridor, connecting Oman, the Netherlands, and Germany. This groundbreaking project aims to enable the large-scale commercial import of liquid hydrogen into Europe, meeting the Renewable Fuels of Non-Biological Origin (RFNBO) standards.

The corridor will link the Port of Duqm in Oman, the Port of Amsterdam in the Netherlands, and Duisburg Port in Germany, three major logistical hubs. A total of 11 parties are involved in the project, including Hydrom (Oman’s national green hydrogen coordinator), OQ (Oman’s energy group), Tata Steel (Netherlands), Hamburger Hafen und Logistik (Germany), and Hynetwork (Netherlands), covering all critical aspects of the envisioned supply chain.

According to the Port of Amsterdam, the agreement outlines several key components essential for the corridor’s development:

Construction of a centralized liquefaction, storage, and export facility at Duqm Port, a major hub for Oman’s green hydrogen production.

Engagement with Germany’s EnBW to discuss pricing and delivery of liquid hydrogen to offtakers located in the Greater Amsterdam Area and other regions in the Netherlands and Germany, with EnBW acting as the system integrator.

Development of dedicated infrastructure along the entire corridor, including import and export facilities at Duqm, Amsterdam, and Duisburg ports, along with multiple distribution methods for both gaseous and liquid hydrogen.

Sophie Hermans, the Dutch Minister for Climate and Green Growth, commented:

“This agreement represents a milestone in our commitment to clean energy. By connecting Oman’s green hydrogen supply with Europe’s energy needs, we are advancing our shared climate goals and building a sustainable energy pathway.”

Salim Nasser Al Aufi, Oman’s Minister of Energy and Minerals, stated:

“This partnership reflects Oman’s commitment to playing a leading role in the global green hydrogen economy while strengthening ties with Europe to support its sustainable clean energy transition.”

It is worth noting that this JDA builds on an existing partnership among Hydrom, Oman’s Ministry of Energy and Minerals, the Port of Amsterdam, ECOLOG, and EnBW to develop a liquid hydrogen corridor. Furthermore, during COP28 held in Dubai in 2023, the Government of Oman and Hydrom signed an agreement with the Port of Amsterdam, Zenith Energy Terminals, and GasLog to develop a liquid hydrogen supply chain from Oman to Europe, particularly the Netherlands.

Haihao Group will continue to monitor industry developments and share updates that are crucial for our clients and partners in the global energy and pipeline sectors.
