High-Integrity Duplex Branch Connections: Haihao Group Dispatches ASTM A182 F51 Outlets to Singapore

Haihao Group has completed a shipment of duplex stainless steel piping components for a Singapore customer, covering branch connection fittings and swage nipples manufactured to MSS SP-97 and MSS SP-95 requirements.

The order includes several sizes of ASTM A182 F51 fittings, with branch connections ranging from 3/4 inch to 3 inch and run sizes from 8 inch to 12 inch. The supplied components were specified with SCH40S, SCH80S and SCH10S dimensions and were supplied with EN 10204 Type 3.2 material certification.

More importantly, the material requirements went beyond dimensional compliance. The components were required to maintain a controlled duplex microstructure, pass 100% UT and PT inspection, meet low-temperature impact requirements at -46°C and demonstrate resistance to pitting under the specified ASTM G48 test conditions.

The combination of different branch sizes and wall thicknesses reflects a piping system where the connection geometry needs to match the actual run pipe and branch pipe specifications rather than using a single standard configuration.

ASTM A182 F51 for Duplex Branch Connections

Most of the branch connection components in this order were produced from ASTM A182 F51, a duplex stainless steel forging grade associated with UNS S31803-type duplex stainless steel.

For this project, material selection was closely tied to the service requirements. The customer specified a ferritic phase content of 35%–60%, together with low-temperature impact performance and corrosion testing.

Controlling the duplex phase balance is important because duplex stainless steel relies on a suitable combination of ferritic and austenitic phases to achieve its intended mechanical and corrosion properties. Excessive deviation from the specified phase range can affect the balance of properties expected from the material.

For the ASTM A182 F51 fittings, therefore, material verification was not treated as a simple grade identification exercise. The specified ferrite range formed part of the customer’s acceptance requirements.

Low-Temperature Impact Requirement at -46°C

The Singapore order also included a demanding low-temperature requirement.

The supplied components were required to meet an impact test temperature of -46°C, with an acceptance value of 45 J minimum and 35 J minimum as specified for the relevant acceptance criteria.

This requirement is particularly relevant when duplex stainless steel fittings are incorporated into piping systems exposed to low ambient or operating temperatures. A material designation alone does not demonstrate that a finished fitting meets a project’s specific low-temperature acceptance criteria.

The manufacturing and inspection process therefore had to account for the specified impact requirements together with dimensional control and non-destructive testing.

100% UT and PT Inspection

The order specified 100% ultrasonic testing (UT) and penetrant testing (PT).

These two inspection methods provide different forms of examination. UT is used to examine material or component integrity for relevant internal discontinuities, while PT is used to reveal suitable surface-breaking indications.

Applying both methods gives the inspection process broader coverage, particularly for forged branch connection components and swage nipples where material integrity and surface condition are important to the final installation.

For customers purchasing ASTM A182 F51 fittings for critical piping applications, the inspection scope should be defined together with the material grade and dimensional standard. The same nominal fitting size can be supplied under very different project acceptance requirements.

ASTM G48 Pitting Test

Corrosion performance was another specific requirement of this order.

The customer required an ASTM G48 pitting corrosion test with a minimum test temperature of 25°C and an exposure time of 24 hours. According to the supplied requirement, no pitting was permitted when examined at 20× magnification.

This requirement is particularly meaningful for duplex stainless steel components because resistance to localized corrosion can be an important consideration in chloride-containing or otherwise aggressive environments.

The ASTM G48 result complements the material and inspection requirements rather than replacing them. For this order, the final acceptance basis combines the specified duplex phase balance, low-temperature impact performance, NDT and corrosion testing.

Type 3.2 Material Certification

All listed products were specified with EN 10204 Type 3.2 material certification.

For an international piping project, Type 3.2 documentation provides a higher level of inspection certification than a standard material certificate because the inspection results are associated with verification by the manufacturer’s authorized inspection representative and an independent inspector or purchaser’s representative, according to the applicable certification arrangement.

For the ASTM A182 F51 fittings, the documentation requirement provides traceability between the supplied material and the customer’s inspection requirements.

The swage nipples in the same order were specified as ASTM A815 UNS S31803, with MSS SP-95 and ASME B16.25 requirements.
