Haihao Group congratulates Qidong COSCO on launch of Nigeria’s first FLNG project

Haihao Group, a leading enterprise in the pipeline system industry, extends its heartfelt congratulations to Qidong COSCO on the successful launch of Nigeria’s first Floating Liquefied Natural Gas (FLNG) vessel project. This monumental achievement was announced at the 2024 Investing in African Energy (IAE) Forum in Paris by UTM Offshore CEO Julius Rone.

Qidong COSCO’s Role in the FLNG Project

UTM Offshore has entrusted the construction of the FLNG vessel’s hull to Qidong COSCO, following the recommendations of Technip Energies, the project’s main contractor. This FLNG vessel will play a crucial role in the exploitation of natural gas from the Yoho field located in the OML104 block. Positioned offshore in Akwa Ibom State at a depth of approximately 60 meters, the vessel will be equipped with advanced features including turret and mooring systems, gas pre-treatment modules, LNG production modules, living quarters, self-sufficient power generation and utility systems, as well as LNG storage and offloading capabilities.

Expanded Capacity and Project Milestones

Due to recent discoveries of additional oil and gas resources in the block, the vessel’s capacity has been significantly increased. Initially designed to handle 1.5 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) of LNG and 300,000 tonnes per annum (TPA) of LPG, the vessel’s capacity has now been expanded to 2.14 MTPA of LNG and 660,000 TPA of LPG. This capacity expansion has necessitated further Front-End Engineering and Design (FEED) work, thus delaying the Final Investment Decision (FID) to later this quarter. Julius Rone has confirmed that the FEED work is nearly complete.

Collaborative Efforts and Future Prospects

UTM Offshore, alongside its partners—Nigeria’s Project Development and Monitoring Committee (NCDMB), Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), and the Delta State Government—continues to push the project forward. With UTM holding a 78% stake, NNPC 20%, and Delta State Government 8%, this collaborative effort aims to drive Nigeria’s first FLNG project towards successful completion.
